Pupils in Scoil Phádraig, Drumkeen recently took part in the North West Vex Robotics tournament. This is a national Robotics competition hosted by LYIT. The children used their design, engineering and construction skills to construct the Vex IQ Clawbot.

The robot is built so that it can be driver controlled or autonomously controlled. The driver control is simply with a control pad and the autonomous programme is through coding. Eight drivers in total took part in the driver controlled category. Pupils from fifth and sixth class then created a code for the clawbot and attempted to score points on the Vex Arena. The children had a great day and enjoyed viewing the other robot designs.

When the event concluded the winning teams were presented with their trophies. Scoil Phádraig, Drumkeen finished in fifth place overall out of twenty schools. This is our first year participating and we intend to continue our participation in this fantastic programme.

We would like to thank LYIT, especially staff members John Connaghan and Gary Cullen for organising the event.
